Governor's Honors Program

During the summer of 2003 I worked as the German Instructor for GHP. My instructional focus for the majors was the connection between Germany and Hollywood. We focused on films, directors and movie stars from the 1920's to present. Students divided into groups, choose a time period, conducted research and presented their information to the class as a panel previous to the film screenings. Each student chose a date to lead a demonstrative or informative presentation on a topic of their choice as well as to lead a debate on a current issue in a German-speaking country. Each major also chose a topic, conducted research in the university library and gave an interactive hour-long presentation during the final week of GHP. My role during the projects was that of facilitator and students met with me once a week during the research process. All foreign language majors also worked together to put on the Foreign Language Cabaret--a series of skits all done in the foreign language! The class worked together to write the skits, create the costumes and polish their final presentation. Several pictures of the Cabaret can be found here.

For the German minors I offered an introductory language class; for the first hour students practiced the German language and for the second hour students prepared and presented information about German-speaking countries, German businesses, musicians, cultural traditions, philosophers and writers. The minors were a very quick and lively group of students and we had a lot of fun working together.

I look forward to working with GHP again in the summer of 2004!
